Update from the Office

Advocacy Updates

We’re pleased to be able to update our members about a few topics that have been on HCCA’s advocacy radar for some years. Here are a few ways we have been, and continue to be, heard about current health issues:

Older people in the emergency department

We support the introduction of a streaming pathway for older people through the Emergency Department (ED), so that when they need to use the ED they can get better care, and their specific needs met. In response to HCCA advocacy for changes to the way older people are managed in the Emergency Department, this pathway is currently in development at our ACT public hospitals. We will be discussing it at the next meeting of the Health of Older People Consumer Reference Group on 21 February. Representatives from Canberra Health Services will be talking us through the proposal.

Voluntary Assisted Dying – Legislative Assembly inquiry

HCCA made two submissions in 2023 on Voluntary Assisted Dying, where we documented the views and concerns of HCCA members and community members. Following on from those submissions, HCCA member Adele Stevens joined Kate Gorman to give evidence to the Select Committee on the Voluntary and Assisted Dying Bill 2023 last Monday, 29 January.

You can find a recording of this hearing on the Legislative Assembly website – Kate and Adele speak around one hour in.

Australian Burden of Disease Study 2023

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) have shared the findings of their 2023 study. The term “disease burden” means how much diseases and injuries affect a group of people.

In 2023, Australians were living longer, with more healthy years. The main health problems that added to burden were:
  • heart disease
  • dementia
  • back pain & problems
  • anxiety disorders
  • chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
Men experienced more disease burden than women. The leading health problems for men were heart disease, back pain, and suicide. The main problems for women were dementia, anxiety, and back pain.

You can read the full Burden of Disease report on the AIHW website.
