Canberra Hospital Expansion Project – Briefing Document for Consumers

Published: 2021

This document was originally created in 2021 for consumer representatives participating in design user groups for the Canberra Hospital’s new Critical Services Building. It reflects what we had found in previous work, and we believe the design principles are applicable in future infrastructure projects.

This document draws from previous work including:

  • Consumer input for this project from a series of consumer focus groups for this project, held in November 2020,
  • Consumer input gathered from HCCA involvement in previous health infrastructure projects since 2008, and
  • HCCA research into the relevant design ideas and principles raised by consumers.

Key contents include:

  • Overarching Design Principles – design for all abilities; design for culturally and linguistically diverse communities; design for family and carer needs; design for wayfinding; design for dementia and cognitive impairment; design for other consumer safety considerations.
  • Consumer Input on Specific Areas of the Hospital – waiting areas and public spaces; emergency department; intensive care unit; inpatient units
