The Health Care Consumers’ Association (HCCA) is undertaking a research project called Experiences of Older Adults with Dementia and Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD): Understanding Healthcare Access in Residential Settings

It aims to understand how people living with dementia access care when living in a residential aged care setting. HCCA would like to hear from people aged 60+ or 50+ for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples who:

  • Identify as having a diagnosis of dementia and have experienced BPSD;
  • AND are living in a residential aged care facility (RACF) in the ACT;
  • AND have presented to the Emergency Department or been hospitalised in the last two years.

OR

  • Family or informal carers of residents who meet these criteria.

We would like to talk to families/carers of people with dementia who are living in residential facilities to understand their perspectives and experiences of supporting their loved ones.

This project is funded by the ACT Health Directorate and has been approved by the ACT Health Human Research Ethics Committee (approval number 2024.ETH.00080).

What does it involve?

Participation will involve an interview with an HCCA staff member, about experiences of receiving health care; the services and support that have been offered and used; what works or worked well; and what could be improved based on their experience.

This will take about 1 hour and can take place online or in person at a location of the participants choosing. With participant permission, interviews will be audio-recorded.

If you choose to take part in this project, a staff member from HCCA will contact you. They will arrange a time and a place to interview you. In the interview we will ask about:

  • What health care services you or your loved one use?
  • How you access the health care you or your loved one need?
  • What works well in your care now? What could be better?

HCCA will develop a report to highlight the care needs and experiences of people with dementia who are living in residential aged care settings. The report will be used to inform the improvement and development of healthcare and health services to better meet the needs of people living with dementia and their families and carers.

How can I participate?
